Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism

Organizer: Institute for Environment, Conservation and Sustainability

Will green capitalism save us from the climate crisis? “Clean” technologies and renewable energy and certainly growing sites of capitalist investment, with government policies playing a key role in making these sectors profitable. But the supply chains that produce the technologies pose vexing dilemmas for the energy transition. These dilemmas are most dramatic at the extractive frontiers of green capitalism: where the natural resources needed to manufacture electric vehicles and build windmills are extracted. In this talk, I will unpack these challenges through the lens of lithium, a so-called ‘critical mineral’ essential for its role in decarbonizing one of the most polluting sectors: transportation.

Environment Seminar Series: “I wish these were trees”: A case against sacrifice zone framings with Dr. Laurence Butet-Roch

Organizer: University of Toronto’s The School of the Environment

Initially used in livestock and energy management circles to designate spaces earmarked for exploitation and degradation in order to preserve others, the nomenclature of sacrifice zones has been reclaimed by the environmental justice movement to call to our attention the unequal distribution of environmental harms due to the spatial patterning of industry. While the term helps bring visibility to how racialized and marginalized communities bear a high burden of environmental hazards, it is also toxic, for it has resulted in narratives that consistently stress how polluted an ecosystem is and how unhealthy the communities it sustains are. This is treacherous terrain, for perceptions of populations and ecosystems as “waste(d)” prime them to become pollution sinks. Simultaneously, such rhetoric, by championing relocation as the most desirable remedy to environmental injustice, encourages further land dispossession.

To make this case, this presentation probes framings of Aamjiwnaang First Nation’s experience of environmental injustice and offers representational justice as an orienting principle that acknowledges the binds between representation as a civic and political right and representation as depiction, as how one is shown and made recognizable to the world.

Climate Policy Rollbacks in Canada's National Media

Organizer: Re.Climate

Canadian media is essential for interpreting and explaining government climate change policies that regulate fossil fuel production and encourage investment and consumption of clean technologies. Yet in 2025 we have seen the federal government pause or cancel several climate change policies, leaving the public to wonder what impact this will have on Canada’s climate commitments and what will replace them? How does the media make sense of climate policy rollbacks? ? How are policies discussed in the media and how are they framed?

To find answers, we looked at national media stories from January to March and June to August 2025, sourced from top Canadian national media like the Globe and Mail, CBC, Toronto Star and the National Post. Our comparison with previous years shows a clear pattern: climate coverage is darkening in tone, political and economic framings are crowding out climate context, and the range of voices has diminished. But there are still bright spots.

Electrification (with the Experts): Radiators + Heat Pumps

Radiators give off lovely, even heat, and they're part of the charm of old houses. But most radiators are hooked up to gas boilers. Can you keep your rads and get a clean, efficient heat pump, too? We'll cover your options at this webinar.

Can radiators—the dominant heating technology 100 years ago—pair with a modern heat pump? Yes! There are two good options that can reduce your gas use and keep you cozy through the winter. Our speakers will cover those options and share best practices from Torontonians who have already made the switch.

Honouring Our Pain, Loving Our World

Earth School: A Climate Grief Mini-Retreat

There is a loneliness in carrying the grief of what is befalling our world.

We know that no future possibilites exist for unlimited growth in a finite planet.

Rather than feeling afraid of our pain for the world, we’ll come together and learn to feel strengthened by it.

This workshop offers a space to bring our grief out of isolation and into community.

Earth School: Honouring Our Pain, Loving Our World is a 90-minute climate grief mini-retreat rooted in Joanna Macy’s Work That Reconnects. Together, we’ll move through the spiral of:

  1. Grounding in gratitude

  2. Honouring our pain for the world

  3. Seeing with new eyes

  4. Going forth with courage

Through meditation, restorative yoga, and guided journaling, we will make space to sit fully with the emotional reality of living in uncertain times.

How can innovative decision-making structures and democratic processes foster more meaningful community engagement?

Participatory democracy—such as citizens’ assemblies, residents’ panels or juries, participatory budgeting, and policy crowdsourcing—offers residents more direct and substantive ways to influence government decisions than traditional methods like voting or consultations.

Big Oil vs. Big Water Webinar

Organizer: A coalition of water advocacy groups

Line 5 is an aging Enbridge pipeline which crosses hundreds of rivers that flow into the Great Lakes and runs through some of the most environmentally sensitive waters in North America, including the Straits of Mackinac, where Lakes Michigan and Huron meet. One rupture could devastate 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. The oil company's solution? Build an unprecedented tunnel and run the pipeline through it for the next 99 years, which doesn't eliminate the risk; it's a project that has never been attempted by a company with a history of massive oil spills, cutting corners, and repeatedly being fined for breaking the rules.
